The 9th Annual Mayland Black Jar Honey Contest is less than one month away, and all TCBA members are invited to submit their honey for judging. Your first entry is free, and each additional entry is $15.

We recommend you download the application and fill it out before you get to the Extension office but the office will have applications on hand to help with the process.

We also encourage you to come out and join your fellow members at the Homeplace Beer Company in Burnsville at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, October 2 to help pick the best tasting honey in Mitchell, Avery and Yancey counties as we close out the 2024 beekeeping season and award accolades to three beekeepers.

Please invite your friends and family to this fun event. Besides sampling an array of honey flavors, they can grab a pizza and a cold brew from Homeplace.

NEW! this year is our varied slate of community sponsors who have generously donated to our silent auction supporting our fundraising and educational efforts.

How to Enter
To be eligible, your honey must be unadulterated honey harvested in Mitchell, Avery or Yancey counties. TCBA members get one free entry. There is a $15 fee for additional entries and entries by non-members.

To enter your honey, you must complete the application and drop it and two one-pound jars of honey off at the Yancey County Cooperative Extension office, 30 E U.S. Hwy. 19E in Burnsville by September 30. Glass queenline jars are preferred but a pint jar is acceptable. All entries should feature your normal labeling. If you are submitting a check with your entry, make it out to the Toe Cane Beekeepers Association and seal it in an envelope. You can also pay via credit card by contacting Brian Brumbaugh, TCBA Treasurer, via the Contact Us form.
