| Julia Mahood, who has gained widespread recognition among beekeepers for her pioneering research on drone congregation areas, will change how you think about male honeybees in her “It’s all About the Drones” presentation. She is scheduled to be the guest speaker at the Toe Cane Beekeepers Association monthly meeting on Tuesday, July 28, at the Trinity Episcopal Church, 15 Hemlock Ave. Spruce Pine. A Georgia Master Craft Beekeeper who currently serves as president of the Georgia Beekeepers Association, she has pioneered the use of mechanical quadcopter drones to study honeybee drones and the mating habits of bees, which takes place 50 to 130 feet in the air. The meeting begins at 6 p.m. with a bee community social. Light refreshments will be served. The official meeting and presentation will start at 6:30 p.m. The meeting is open to the public. She is expected to use her quadcopter drones to explore drone congregation areas in Yancey County. We will share her local findings with the association. Mahood was named Georgia Beekeeper of the Year in 2018. A graphic artist, she also designed Georgia’s “Save the Honey Bee” license plate. Mahood is passionate about education and teaches beekeeping in Georgia prisons. TCBA meets monthly on the 4th Tuesday, March through September. Meetings are open to the public. |
