Greg Rogers, a commercial beekeeper from Asheville, will speak to the Toe Cane Beekeepers Association’s September 24 meeting about his research on extended release oxalic acid sponges to control varroa mites. The meeting is free and open to the public and begins at 6:30 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church in Spruce Pine.

Rogers runs Haw Creek Honey Company in Asheville, where he manages 350-400 colonies for honey production and apple pollination. He has 42 years of beekeeping experience, and is a frequent speaker at state and national beekeeping conferences.

In cooperation with Dr. David Tarpy at NC State University, Rogers completed a rigorous research project last year on the effectiveness of oxalic acid/glycerin extended release sponges. He will speak about this research project as well as conclusions reached about their effectiveness and best use practices.
