Discover the fascinating world of honey bees by enrolling in Toe Cane Beekeepers’ Beginning Beekeeping School.

In one short weekend, you can become a “Certified Beekeeper,” and you’ll learn how to set up a new hive, care for a healthy colony, explore the incredible society of honey bees and understand the vital role honey bees play in pollination and our environment.

The bee school is taught by a NCSBA Master Beekeeper and will be held at the NC Cooperative Extension office, 30 E US 19E,Burnsville at 7 p.m. on February 6, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday the 7th , and concludes 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday the 8th.  Seating is limited and class may sell out.

Graduates who pass the written exam and a subsequent hands-on practical test will become North Carolina State Beekeepers Association (NCSBA) Certified Beekeepers.

Discover the fascinating world of honey bees by enrolling in Toe Cane Beekeepers’ Beginning Beekeeping School.

In one short weekend, you can become a “Certified Beekeeper,” and you’ll learn how to set up a new hive, care for a healthy colony, explore the incredible society of honey bees and understand the vital role honey bees play in pollination and our environment.

The bee school will be held at the NC Cooperative Extension office, 30 E US 19E, Burnsville on these dates:

  • 7 to 9 p.m. Friday,  February 6
  • 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, February 7
  • 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, February 8

 

Graduates who pass Sunday’s written exam and a subsequent hands-on practical test will become North Carolina State Beekeepers Association (NCSBA) Certified Beekeepers.

The tuition includes:

  • First Lesson in Beekeeping, a textbook by Keith A Delaplane
  • Lunch on Saturday
  • 2026 membership in the TCBA
  • 2026 membership in the NCSBA
  • An optional written and practical exam which is required to earn your state certification.  The practical exam will be scheduled at the TCBA Educational Apiary at Mayland on an individual basis after the weather warms up.

 

Membership in the TCBA also gives you access to experienced beekeepers, access to hands-on learning in the TCBA Educational Apiary at Mayland, and the opportunity to find a beekeeping mentor.

Lead instructor for the class  is NCSBA Master Beekeeper Deborah Griffith.

Terms and Conditions

  • Enrolment is for one participant.  For couples, families, or other groups, you will need to pay the $75 tuition fee per person.  Just select the correct number of enrollees and add to the cart.  Then checkout.  We will contact you afterwards to confirm the names of additional participants.
  • Seating is limited.  The number shown above is the number of available places remaining.  Spots in the class are assigned on a first-come first-served basis.
  • After January 19, your tuition is non-refundable.  Prior to that date, cancellations will receive a $65 refund.
  • Minimum age to attend is 14.  Youths under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Both the adult and juvenile must be enroll in the course.
