Bee Basics for Beginning Beekeepers is one-day, hands-on introductory class for new beekeepers and people considering becoming beekeepers. This class is a brief introduction to beekeeping and covers hives and other beekeeping equipment, sting prevention, how to work a hive, and troubleshooting.  Scroll down for more information.

The TCBA Bee Basics for Beginning Beekeepers is an introductory class designed for the new beekeeper or individual considering beekeeping.  At the end of the one-day hands-on class, you will know:

  • Whether or not beekeeping is right for you.
  • How to assemble a hive of your very own
  • Where to site or place your hive on your property
  • How to protect your hive from bears and other wildlife
  • How to install a package of bees or a nucleus hive (nuc)
  • What’s the best way to obtain your bees
  • What equipment you need to have on hand before your bees arrive
  • What equipment is useful but can be acquired later
  • Several ways to feed your bees and when to do so
  • How to protect yourself and those around you from from stings
  • When and why to inspect your bees and what to look for during an inspection
  • The stages of brood and the life cycle of a bee
  • How to prevent a swarm before it starts
  • How to make a split
  • When to add honey supers
  • The importance of testing and treating your bees for mites

 

Class will be held March 23, 2024 at an apiary near Burnsville and will run from 10 a.m. until approximately 4 p.m.  Directions will be provided after registration.

Requirements

To allow each participant sufficient hands-on time, slots for this class are limited.  You must pre-register by adding this item to your shopping cart and checking out.

This class will be held outdoors. There is a bathroom on site, but participants should bring the following:

  • Lunch and snacks
  • Water or other beverages so you can stay hydrated
  • A folding camp chair or stool
  • Weather-appropriate clothing
  • Bee protective suit, veil, and gloves, if you have them.

Important Information

Children under age 14 are prohibited.  Children age 14 to 17 must be accompanied by a responsible adult who is a member of the TCBA.  Pets are also prohibited.

Bees can and do sting people, even when safety precautions are taken.  This class is not recommended if you are allergic to bee stings or similar venom.  Attendees will be required to sign a waiver at the beginning of class.

In the event of bad weather, the rain date is Saturday, March 30.
